The Great Kiwi Snack Off

In April 2023, Air New Zealand commenced the search for the next generation of onboard snacks, to be served complimentary across our network. Through a nationwide campaign dubbed “The Great Kiwi Snack Off”, we looked to our customers to tell us what they wanted to snack on, and to the New Zealand snack industry to share with us what innovative and creative snacks they had up their sleeves to offer.

The Great Kiwi Snack Off had lofty goals to achieve:

  • Deliver on choice and change (more frequent product rotations providing variety)
  • Provide for time-of-day appetites
  • Elevate our supplier diversity by seeking and supporting Māori, Pasifika and regional New Zealand suppliers
  • Cater to dietary diversity
  • Celebrate New Zealand brands which showcase the best of Aotearoa New Zealand provenance
  • Support suppliers who make positive contributions through social impact and sustainability programmes
  • Create moments of magic through surprise and delight, flavour innovation and playfulness

More than 400 New Zealand suppliers responded to the opportunity to put their best snacks forward. The delicious, weird and wonderful creations of 30 suppliers were shortlisted to meet with Air New Zealand and showcase their snacks. More than 70 different snacks were sampled and taste tested internally, before we went back to the nation seeking ‘Official Snacksperts’, our taste testers, to help us make the final decision.

A staggering 9000 applications were received for the six Snackspert positions, with self-appointed ‘foodies’ from across the country being flown to Air New Zealand HQ in Auckland to represent their fellow nationwide travellers. A grandmother, a firefighter, a medical student, a sales professional and a mother and 12-year-old daughter combo were chosen to help us make the final selection.

Hailing from around Aotearoa New Zealand, our new snack range features 14 suppliers that shine a spotlight on the very best our regions have to offer, from Canterbury, Nelson, Hawke’s Bay, to the Eastern Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

Our new snacks began appearing onboard from December 2023 and will be rolled out across a variety of domestic and international routes, across various cabins, over the next 12 months.

In the calendar rotation ahead, the Great Kiwi Snack Off is bringing our customers:

  • Cinnamon glazed macadamias
  • Innovative crunchy cheese puffs
  • Chocolate dipped salted pretzels
  • Skinny dipped almonds and chocolate nut blends
  • Feijoa cider and lemon meringue pie gourmet popcorn
  • Churro corn puffs
  • Chocolate Fish n Chip and Pavlova cookie
  • White chocolate coated ginger biscuit
  • Salt and vinegar crisps
  • Oat baked squares in chocolate brownie and raspberry white chocolate
  • Primal bars
  • Pea puffs
  • Chocolate wafer bites
  • Savoury trail mix

The Great Kiwi Snack Off activity gained significant media attention around New Zealand and the world, with national breakfast television shows broadcasting a number of live interviews with Air New Zealand’s Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty, as the search for new snacks gained momentum and took over the nation’s hearts and tastebuds.

One leading independent global industry news site, Simple Flying, wrote: “Air New Zealand has injected a lot of fun and community involvement into a process that would usually be done behind closed doors, which in many ways epitomizes how the airline thinks about its customers. Snacks may be a little thing to spend so much time and effort on, but it’s a feel-good factor in the whole passenger experience”.

Air New Zealand was delighted with the response to our search for Snacksperts, helping us ensure the final selection truly reflects what our customers value and enjoy. While a complimentary snack may seem like a small part of our overall customer experience, engaging with the nation with The Great Kiwi Snack Off proved invaluable to uncover the best our country has to offer and see just how passionate our customers are about snacks.
