Launched in April 2022 as part of En Route’s retail on board offering, the Serrano ham and Iberico cheese Bocadillo-style sandwich features soft white baguette filled with slices of authentic cured Serrano ham and buttery Iberico cheese, with a hint of sundried tomatoes, bringing the taste of Andalusia to the skies.
The product is both easy to eat and open, free from genetically modified ingredients, and can be stored frozen for up to nine months, reducing food waste compared to a fresh product and providing consistency across the network while retaining the quality of a fresh sandwich.
Part of En Route’s regionalised range of products, the sandwich has been designed to provide a consistently high-quality buy on board option that appeals to European taste preferences.
Evidenced by the fact that more than 818,000 sold over the last year, passengers have been attracted to the regional take on a classic sandwich flavour using authentic Spanish ingredients.
Older passengers like the nostalgic, reliable and familiar flavour, while younger passengers are interested in keeping food miles as low as possible by its use of local suppliers.
The sandwich can be served both hot and cold and is packaged in flow wrap and a plastic-free 270gsm ovenable board that is both recyclable and compostable.
The kraft textured background of the packaging evokes the artisanal nature of the product and gives it a quality feel.
