Etihad's fully-reusable and recyclable Economy dining tableware

Etihad Airways’ new Economy class experience has been designed with sustainability and improved guest experience in mind.

The new dining experience, designed in partnership with deSter, features fully reusable tableware made from recycled high-quality plastic, and eliminates the use of single-use plastic. The tray, casserole dish, side bowls and their lids as well as the platter are part of a closed-loop recycling system. At the end of their life-cycle, they are collected, washed, grounded down, and reused to make new replacement products, ensuring zero waste.

Working with deSter, the closed-loop recycling programme is planned to be conducted locally within the UAE in the future and will lead to ~80% of the main tableware set being locally produced, supporting our goal of further improving overall environmental impact by moving towards locally-produced products.

Complementing the deSter produced crockery is a beautifully-designed quality stainless-steel cutlery set, biodegradable paper cups, bespoke bamboo stirrers and pressed paperboard cutlery, replacing all single use plastic.

In 2019, Etihad committed to removing 80% of single-use plastic from its operation, the introduction of this new inflight equipment ensured that the airline not only met but exceeded this sustainability goal where more than 30 million pieces of single-use plastics have been removed annually.

With the roll out of this programme, Etihad continues to lead in sustainability and showcases that its commitment to sustainability doesn’t come at a compromise to the quality and thoughtfulness behind Etihad’s products and guest experience.
